Well, the Spring Break nationals have come and gone. Personally, I can’t wait for these races... They are races that the whole team is at, tracks that we are pretty familiar with and a lot closer drives than the rest of the nationals that we attend! It’s a chance for the racers from up north to come down for some typically better weather, hang out with friends they haven’t seen all summer and go home to show off the sun burn they scored!

On March 13-15, the third round of Qualifiers were held at Charlotte BMX in Port Charlotte, Florida. This is the third round of Qualifiers for the Florida State Series, so the need to get some good scores in if you don’t already have them starts to become a necessity. Everyone is usually up to speed and ready to get down to business! As far as races go, this is one of my favorite tracks. It isn’t your typical layout and I think that it challenges the riders because of it. The weather was really nice, although it seemed like it was going to be a scorcher based on Fridays practice. It was pretty windy, so that added to the fatigue factor, but helped the heat index. There were 155 motos on Saturday and 150 on Sunday, making this round a pretty good turnout for sure!
CJ McGuire has had better weekends to say the least. After looking good in all three rounds of motos, he had one not so good lap in his semi and didn’t make the main. He was able to regroup though for Sunday and took the number two spot on the podium behind Tyler Faoro. CJ looked good all weekend, just one little hick-up set him back. The season isn’t over yet though. I’m sure he will back up and charging at the next stop.

Raul Gomez had another fantastic weekend. He laid down some really good laps and was able to bring home the gold on both bikes this weekend. Not losing a lap makes the drive home that much easier.

Petey Peters, the oldest guy in 19-25 Expert (LOL!), was at Port Charlotte. As was his better half, KP! Petey did good on the weekend, he scored a second and a third in class and a third and a fourth in 16 and over open. I know he was pretty spent on Saturday night. Running with the young bucks can really take it out of you!
Cory Watts had a pretty good weekend himself. He took top honors in both class and open both days. Not surprising, Port Charlotte is Cory’s old home track. He came through for the friends and family that came out to watch. It was especially good to see his sister Cassie and the new baby who also made it out both days.
The hard charger of the weekend was definitely Bryan Kipp. Although his results don’t sa y it, he did awesome this weekend. He was going for the lead in the second turn on Saturday and lost his front end, then got stuck on the outside of the first turn on Sunday, couldn’t get over and got acquainted with the back of the first turn... No Bueno! He keep a smile on his face though (yeah, imagine that Kipper smiling... Huh!) and you can bet he is looking forward to the nationals coming up!

Tucker Rice had another superb weekend in class, taking home two firsts. The monkey on his back is definitely cruiser. He looked really good on Saturday taking a strong second. Then on Sunday he had to settle for a third, not the usual report for Tucker, but it happens. You can’t win them all, but it’s not for lack of effort.
Jeff DeVido, the CEO, was able to get himself into the mains each day. Saturday we scored a seventh and Sunday he finished sixth. Come Tampa, I think he will be in better shape and up to speed with the front half of the main.
That’s it from Port Charlotte... See you at the Spring Break nationals!

A buddy of ours, Evan Rosenberg, is putting together a benefit race for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. It will be held at Okeeheelee BMX track in West Palm Beach, FL. on Sunday, March 29, 2009. The plan is simple... Hold a clinic followed by a "Pro/Am" race in conjunction with a local event.
A local "Hop-Up Shop", Speed and Truck World, has signed on as the major sponsor. They are giving $2500.00 for the "Pro/Am" purse. Plus, they are helping with some of the cost of the printing of the fliers.
The NBL has waived ALL fees for this event as they see the spirit for which this is being done.
Please help us make this a truly unique event and support a great cause.
We hope to see you there!

Our main man north of the border, Dean Toews, has checked in and gave us this latest update...
“Just giving you an update on the past couple of weekends of solid racing up here in the North. Two weeks back, as a pre race to the UCI Western Nationals there was a BC Cup series race weekend. I raced Saturday night and won every round in 30 and over expert. Sunday I did not race due to popping my SI joint in my back and bowed out to rest up for the Nationals this weekend. I had a great weekend at the Western Nationals as I rode flawless! I won every moto both Saturday and Sunday which will give me the NAG 1 going into the next set of races. This wraps up our indoor season and I will be getting ready to race outdoor in another month. I think the next stop if all goes well is Eugene Oregon the ABA Nationals in March. Talk to you guys soon.”
That’s awesome Dean! That is the kind of news we like to hear for sure. Keep up the hard work, good luck in Eugene!

The Florida State Series is in full swing! On January 23-25, the second round of Qualifiers were held at St. Pete BMX in St, Petersburg, Florida. St. Pete has finally gotten to move their track location. I say finally because it has been at least a 6-7 year battle for them. But persistence has paid off and they have a brand new facility! I know what it’s like to take on such a huge task as moving a track and what a relief it is when it’s all said and done.
With 157 motos on Saturday and 144 on Sunday, it looked to be a pretty good weekend for BMX in the Sunshine State. The weather was perfect! A little chilly in the early hours, but spot on for the bulk of the day. The MCS Factory Team was on hand to get some good scores in and promote the brand the best way we know how... by winning! That was the plan and we pretty much stayed on task!
CJ McGuire has been dieing to get back to some Pro racing action after
the long drive home from Lexington. He is a breathe of fresh air under
the tent to say the least. We believe in him and I think he is very
receptive to it. He brought home a first on Saturday and a deuce on
Sunday.
Raul Gomez looked strong as ever in 35-39 Cruiser and 35-39 Expert. He
is going to have all he can handle in the form of Audiobahn/Dyna-pep’s
Darin Houston. I love to see these guys battle it out every time they
are on the track! Raul took two firsts in class and a first and a third
in cruiser.
It’s always good to see Petey Peters. He has found a new fire this year
and it is showing. He has been getting into the gym and doing the
things that you need to do to succeed at this game. He would score a
pair of seconds in class behind Cory and a fourth and a sixth in open.

Cory Watts has been killing it in class lately, winning every lap in
St. Pete. Now if he could just do the same thing in Open! Put him down
for two firsts in class and a fourth and a third in Open.
Bryan Kipp is our guy in 15 Expert. Pound for pound he has the best
track speed of anybody on the team. Now if we could just get him
polished up a bit he will be on top of the podium every race. He got a
second and a third this weekend.
Tucker Rice, I love this kid! He is starting to realize that he can get
in there and mix it up with riders that are a little older than him.
That is going to help him come national time for sure. Tuck crushed
them in class for two firsts and netted a second and a third in cruiser.
Well, next stop on the SSA Tour is Port Charlotte. Cory Watts’ old
stopping grounds. We always have a pretty good time there. The date for
the race is March 13-15th. Hopefully you can make it. See you there!

On January 17, our guy north of the border, Dean Toews, was inducted into the Canadian BMX Hall of Fame. Being one of only seven riders to be inducted is no small feat. Dean has been racing for over 25 years, with ‘09 making it 26 years! “It was a cool night and an honor as of the seven inductees, the guys said they think I am the longest rider to hold a license that is still around racing. To top the evening off, I made the main in a 28 rider Pro AM! 36 x and still ripp’n!”
Congratulations Dean!

I'll be the first one to admit, the Christmas Classic was a lot better than I thought it was going to be! Going up there I wasn't expecting it to be that good of a race at all. After all, we weren't going to Columbus, we were going to Lexington, VA. At least that was the attitude coming up. Once we got there, I think everyone realized that it wasn't really that bad... The track was pretty good, the weather wasn't bad and plenty of food choices. The only thing that could have made it better for me was a place for "Manufacturers" to set-up and display our products to everyone. Personally, I think that adds a lot of flavor to each event. After all, I do believe it is our (manufacturers) obligation to dress it up and make it look good, pass out stickers, had out literature and just basically present a proper image!
For those of you that don't know, the first day of the "Christmas Classic" is always the Presidents Cup race. Each state accumulates as many points as they can in the mains and the state with the most points wins, pretty simple stuff. For years, Florida was the top dog at this race. Last year, Ohio slid one by the goalie and took the win by one point. So Florida has been on pins and needles to try and get the Cup back. It wasn't easy, but they did! The "Carolina's" teamed up to give Florida a strong run at the Cup, but had to settle for 2nd place, with Ohio coming in 3rd. The MCS Factory Team did their part with four first place finishes. CJ McGuire won Pro, Cory Watts won 18X, Tucker Rice won 11X and Raul Gomez won 30 & Over Open. Bryan Kipp had a rough main and salvaged a 5th after a crash in the first turn, he was looking good all day up until the main.
The second two days of racing are Big-A Nationals. Here is a quick run-down of how everyone did...
CJ McGuire: CJ was looking super fast both days. He was one of only a few guys that had the hottest line on the third straight, that left him tripling into the turn. Unfortunately, he wouldn't get to the third straight to use it either day! On day one, he got caught up in a 2nd turn gone sour move when he was running in 3rd. On the 2nd day, he again got collected up in a first turn crash in his semi. It was a rough two days of racing for him, but he shows more promise than anyone had hoped for. He will be a contender by years end for sure!
Raul Gomez: Having made the switch back to amateur, Raul was ready to get right to it, getting some good national scores. Having looked good in his motos it seemed a pretty good bet that he would be getting those scores... Then along came the bug! The flu bug that is. We couldn't figure out why Raul was running out of energy so fast. He would have to settle for a 3rd in class and a 5th in cruiser. After going home to the hotel on day one, he was shot out! Day two came around and we decided to just try and focus on one bike and even that became too much by the end of the day. Raul won all his mots, but had to settle for a 3rd in the main.
Cory Watts: Cory Watts... This guy kills me sometimes. If I could just get him to put a touch more effort into his riding he could be on top of his class. Cory won all his motos, like usual, then again like usual, he hits the gate in his main, yet still comes back to get 2nd. Imagine what he could do if he got consistent gates! On day two, he got tangled up in the first turn and took a 5th in the main. Cory is a great kid, he is focused on his education (which we support 100%) and he is a real pleasure to be around. Hopefully, it will be a banner year for Cory, he deserves it.
Bryan Kipp: What can you say about Kipper that hasn't been said before? He clearly has the ability to get the job done, but sometimes just seems to fall asleep on the gate! Once that gate goes down though, he has GREAT track speed and makes some awesome moves on the track. His results haven't been something he is psyched about, but with a little more focus, he should be at the front of his class. Bryan would bring home a 4th on day one and a 5th on day two. I'm looking forward to seeing what Kipper does this year. I know he has the ability, he just needs to go get it!
Tucker Rice: Ahhhh... The "Ice Man!" Tucker is so quiet and reserved off the track, it's hard to believe it's the same kid on the track. Unfortunately for Tuck he is at the bottom end of the age group in cruiser having to race the 12 year olds and only being 11. It's ok though, it is a good learning experience and he is making the most of it. Class is a different story though, having taken the win on day one. Day two however didn't go to plan 100%, when he had to settle for a duece. That's ok though, sometimes it just doesn't work out. There will be plenty more races and plenty more firsts!
Overall, it was a good weekend in Virginia. We all had a pretty good time. The NBL did a good job in running the race. Like I mentioned before, dress it up a little bit more and I think you will have a winner. Next national stop for us is the one in High Springs, Florida. It's on the same weekend as the Jacksonville AMA SX. So we will be splitting asap after the national and booking it over to check it out. Otherwise, we will see you in St. Pete for the SSA Qualifier. See you soon!
